In response to growing water demand in the Northern Emirates, Mubadala along with Saudi Arabia’s Utilities developer ACWA Power and the Federal Electricity and Water Authority of the UAE are developing a 682,000 m3/day desalination plant in the Emirate of Umm Al Quwain (200 km north of Abu Dhabi).
The total investment size is around AED 3.0 billion with financing provided through debt by consortium consisting of First Abu Dhabi Bank, Mitsubishi Financial Group, Korea Development bank, Siemens Bank, Standard Chartered, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation and Saudi American Bank.
The construction of the plant is undertaken by a consortium of leading French water company Veolia Sidem and Chinese contractor China Gezhouba Group (CGGC) and will utilize leading Reverse Osmosis technology with completion expected in 2022
Upon completion, the plant will be operated by a consortium of Mubadala and Saudi Arabia’s NOMAC – a subsidiary of ACWA Power and the plant will sell its output through a 35 year water purchase agreement with the Federal Electricity and Water Authority.
