Sparking an interest in STEM

Abu Dhabi’s rapidly diversifying economy is advancing the emirate’s position in a number of global sectors. A decade ago, jobs such as Aerostructure Technician and Semiconductor Process Engineer did not exist.

The challenge is ensuring that highly skilled local talent is growing apace with demand. Preparing the UAE’s workforce to seize the career opportunities available takes a long-term approach that begins with youth – and parents.

Mubadala is helping ignite a passion for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) subjects through a range of programs that spark interest and encourage youth and their families to think about a wider spectrum of opportunities.

By raising awareness about STEM skills and how they form the basis for meaningful careers in Abu Dhabi’s new industries, we are helping develop a skilled local workforce to support continued economic growth.

Through partnering with renowned international medical institutions, Mubadala was able to establish facilities for specialized healthcare needs. This provided opportunities for local talent to develop and thrive in these specialized medical fields.

Dr. Farhana Bin Lootah’s enthusiasm for promoting community health grew from her early career experience. She started her career in the Republic of Ireland, working in ambulatory health services, where she developed a keen interest in elder care, diabetes, obesity, disease prevention and public health awareness.

Through her work at Imperial College London Diabetes Centre, Dr. Bin Lootah has taken a leading role in the Centre's award-winning public health awareness campaign, Diabetes.Knowledge.Action. The Imperial College London Diabetes Centre in Abu Dhabi was Mubadala’s first healthcare offering, established in 2006 to provide world-class treatment aimed at preventing, managing and even reversing diabetes.

Dr. Bin Loota’s knowledge of diabetes management and her active participation in community outreach program promoting a healthy lifestyle have benefitted thousands of patients, raising public awareness about diabetes prevention and supporting Mubadala’s efforts to meet the specific healthcare needs of the Abu Dhabi population.

A homegrown talent, Dr. Sameera Al Obaidli completed her medical training through a number of rotations at Al Mafraq, Corniche, Al Jazeera and Central Hospitals in Abu Dhabi. It was important for her to return to the UAE after earning her degree in Medicine & Surgery from Ovidius University in Constanta, Romania.

After building extensive experience in Family, Internal and Emergency Medicine, Dr. Al Obaidli was the ideal candidate to lead Abu Dhabi Telemedicine Centre’s experienced clinical team as Lead Physician in 2015.

“Abu Dhabi Telemedicine Centre was established to increase access to medical care, 24/7 – particularly for non-emergency cases that may not necessitate in-person consultations –ensuring that patients can rest and recover, rather than organizing trips to hospitals or clinics,” says Dr. Al Obaidli. She is responsible for leading the full team of nurses and physicians on-site and works closely with the Centre’s medical team to provide high quality medical consultations and compassionate patient care over the phone.

As the first Emirati physiotherapist at Healthpoint’s dedicated, women’s-only physiotherapy center, Marwa Al Hosani takes great pride in helping her patients.

"It's so fulfilling to be told, 'Thank you, I feel a lot better now’”, says Al Hosani.

Though she started college with the intention to major in medicine, Al Hosani realized the great potential of physiotherapy as a relatively new field in the UAE, and she graduated from Sharjah University with a Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy in 2013.

Al Hosani has worked within Mubadala's healthcare network since 2012, first at Abu Dhabi Knee & Sports Medicine Centre and later at Healthpoint. She credits the expert mentorship of the hospital’s Medical Director, Dr. Nader Darwich, and its Head of Physiotherapy - Orthopedics, Azzam Kamal, for helping accelerate her professional development.

“Being surrounded by world-class experts in my field has allowed me to advance my career and achieve my dream of being the first female Emirati physiotherapist to specialize in sports injury here in Abu Dhabi," explains Al Hosani.

“It’s very rewarding to practice at home in the UAE, and to have the opportunity to shape a culturally-sensitive approach to care based on my own experiences as an Emirati woman.”

“Rehabilitation services—especially physical therapy—are a key part of many patients’ treatment and recovery plans, and healthcare practitioners around the world recognize that,” says Dr. Ahmed Bashkeel, Manager of Inpatient Therapies and Rehabilitation at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi.

Overseeing all inpatient and outpatient physical, occupational, and speech therapy services at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, Dr. Bashkeel guides a team of highly skilled therapists specializing in neurological, cardiovascular, and medical spine rehabilitation.  He is recognized for his dedication to promoting international best practice standards in the field of Physical Therapy in the UAE.

Believing that education is a fundamental catalyst of change and growth, he has also taken part in several community outreach and academic programs, with the ultimate goal of changing the perception of physical therapy and rehabilitation and nurturing aspiring homegrown talent in the field.

Dr. Bashkeel holds a Doctorate of Physical Therapy degree from the University of Southern California, the top-ranked physical therapy school in the United States, and is the first Emirati to do so.  He is also a member of the American Physical Therapy Association and the Emirates Physiotherapy Society.
